Instagram has a new boss now: Adam Mosseri, a 10-year veteran of Facebook Inc. According to a blog post written by Instagram’s outgoing leaders, cofounders Mike Krieger, and Kevin Systrom, Mosseri starts in his new role today.
“We are thrilled to hand over the reins to a product leader with a strong design background and a focus on craft and simplicity — as well as a deep understanding of the importance of community,” Systrom and Krieger announced.
“These are the values and principles that have been essential to us at Instagram since the day we started, and we’re excited for Adam to carry them forward.”
This news follows the earlier surprise announcement that Kevin Systrom and Krieger would leave Instagram.
The cofounders didn’t explain why they are leaving. They join a group of high-profile entrepreneurs who sold their companies to Facebook — such as WhatsApp founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton — only to become disillusioned with the parent company.
In passing administration of Instagram to Mosseri, Systrom and Krieger said they remained excited at the future for Instagram and they are sure that Mosseri’s management could help Instagram grow.
“Since we announced our departure, many people have asked us what we hope for the future of Instagram. To us, the most important thing is keeping our community — all of you — front and center in all that Instagram does. We believe that Adam will stay true to these values and that Instagram will continue to thrive,” Systrom and Krieger wrote.
Before his new job, Mosseri had worked as Instagram’s head of product since May. Joining Facebook in 2008, Mosseri started to work as a designer and began to lead the social network’s news feed.
