What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your Instagram account by requiring you to enter an additional password every time you log in.

How will two-factor verification protect me?

If someone has your Instagram password, they can easily access your account, but with two-factor authentication, your password is like a key to a simple wooden door, and the additional password is like a huge metal safe right behind it; it’s hard to guess the combination when there are infinite possibilities randomly.

How will I get the additional code?

Via text message.

How to set up the two-factor authentication for my Instagram account?

1- Go to your Instagram profile and tap on settings. (the gear on iPhone and three dots on Android)

2- Scroll down and tap on “two-factor verification.”

3- Turn on the “require security code” by tapping on it.

4- If you don’t have a confirmed phone number for your Instagram account, you will be required to enter a phone number, after that, tap Next.

5- A confirmation code will be sent to you. Enter that and tap Next.

What about the backup access?

Backup codes are useful if you lose access to your phone number and can’t receive a security code by text.” (Instagram)

When you turn on the “two-factor authentication,” you will be able to have access to a list of backup codes. You’ll have five available that you can enter in case something happens. You can also reset these additional codes.

I recommend you to take a screenshot of these codes so you can have easy access to them, or to write them down in case something goes wrong.
